      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, dramatic world of Hans Pfitzner's "Der arme Heinrich," a captivating opera that showcases the composer's early genius. This three-act masterpiece, composed between 1890 and 1894, is Pfitzner's debut work and a testament to his enduring legacy in the realm of classical music. The opera, with its intricate libretto by James Grun, unfolds over two hours and twenty-four minutes, drawing you into a tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption.

The album, released on January 1, 2002, by Capriccio, features the stellar performance of Norbert Schmittberg and a ensemble of talented artists. Pfitzner's compositional prowess is evident in the opera's sweeping preludes, poignant arias, and powerful choruses, each track a testament to his anti-modernist style and deep emotional resonance.

Hans Pfitzner, a German composer, conductor, and polemicist, was a significant figure in his generation, known for his friendships with notable figures like Thomas Mann and Bruno Walter. "Der arme Heinrich" is a prime example of his ability to craft compelling narratives through music, making this album a essential addition to any classical music collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Pfitzner or new to his work, this opera offers a profound and engaging listening experience.

      About Hans Pfitzner

Hans Pfitzner, a German composer born in Moscow in 1869, was a staunch defender of traditional German music and culture, positioning himself as an anti-modernist throughout his career. His most renowned work, the post-Romantic opera "Palestrina," showcases his commitment to upholding traditional ideals well into the 20th century. Pfitzner's contributions to the orchestral and chamber music repertoire are also notable, including concertos for violin, piano, and cello, a symphony, and three string quartets. His first stage work, "Arme Heinrich," premiered in Mainz, and his career took him through teaching and conducting roles in Berlin before settling in Munich in 1906. Pfitzner's music offers a rich, romantic journey through the heart of German musical tradition.
