      Album Details

André Cluytens, a renowned conductor with a rich legacy in classical music, presents "Pastoral" - Orchestral Favourites, a captivating collection of timeless orchestral works set for release on May 15, 2025, under Warner Classics. This album is a celebration of Cluytens' mastery, featuring a diverse array of compositions that showcase his profound interpretation and the exquisite artistry of the Wiener Philharmoniker.

Spanning a generous 2 hours and 27 minutes, the album is a treasure trove of classical gems. It opens with the iconic first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, followed by a journey through the pastoral landscapes of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 and the playful charm of his Symphony No. 8. Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony adds a touch of vivacity, while Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," orchestrated by Ravel, offers a vivid and colorful journey.

Smetana's "Vltava," a symphonic poem depicting the Moldau River, is presented in its entirety, providing a sweeping and evocative experience. Delibes' ballet music from "Coppélia" brings a sense of dance and elegance, while Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" delivers dramatic intensity. The album also includes selections from Massenet, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel, Debussy, Fauré, Mozart, and Bizet, each contributing to the rich tapestry of this orchestral anthology.

Ravel's works are particularly highlighted, with excerpts from "Ma mère l'Oye," "Le tombeau de Couperin," and the hauntingly beautiful "Pavane pour une infante défunte." The album concludes with Fauré's serene "In paradisum" from his Requiem, leaving the listener in a state of tranquil reflection.

"Pastoral" - Orchestral Favourites is not just a compilation but a testament to André Cluytens' enduring influence and the Wiener Philharmoniker's unparalleled excellence. It is a must-listen for both seasoned classical enthusiasts and those new to the genre, offering a rich and rewarding exploration of some of the most beloved works in the orchestral repertoire.

      About André Cluytens

André Cluytens, born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1905, was a renowned French conductor whose career spanned the concert hall, opera house, and recording studio. With a repertoire that ranged from Viennese classics to 20th-century works, Cluytens was celebrated for his versatility and deep musical insight. He was the first French conductor to lead performances at Bayreuth in 1955, and his interpretations of Wagner's "The Ring" and "Parsifal" at La Scala further cemented his reputation. Cluytens' recordings, which began in 1943, are a testament to his prolific career and enduring legacy. His work with the Orchestre National and other esteemed ensembles showcases his ability to bring out the best in both orchestral and operatic repertoire. Despite not achieving the same international fame as some of his contemporaries, Cluytens remains a beloved figure in classical music, known for his nuanced and expressive conducting style. His recordings, spanning works by Berlioz, Beethoven, and Offenbach, continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide. Cluytens passed away in Paris in 1967, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to influence conductors and musicians today.
