      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Hindustani classical music with "Pandit Rajan & Sajan Mishra: Jugalbandi Duet," a captivating live performance recorded at The Kufa Gallery in London, July 1995. This album, released by Navras Records in January 1996, showcases the extraordinary talent of the renowned brothers, Rajan & Sajan Mishra, who are celebrated for their soulful renditions and deep understanding of Indian classical music.

The album spans a generous 1 hour and 18 minutes, featuring six tracks that delve into the intricate beauty of two ragas: Rag Desi and Rag Shuddh Bhairavi. Each track is a masterclass in vocal prowess, with the brothers seamlessly blending their voices in a jugalbandi (duet) that is both harmonious and exhilarating. The album opens with an alap (introductory improvisation) in Rag Desi, setting the stage for a journey through khyal compositions in various talas (rhythmic cycles), including Vilambit Ektal and Drut Ektal. The second half of the album is devoted to Rag Shuddh Bhairavi, beginning with a spoken introduction that provides context and insight into the raga, followed by an alap and khyal in Ektal.

Rajan & Sajan Mishra's performances are marked by their impeccable sense of rhythm, melodic innovation, and emotional depth. Their ability to convey the essence of each raga, along with their spontaneous creativity, makes this album a treasure trove for both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers to Indian classical music. The live setting adds an extra layer of authenticity and energy, capturing the essence of a traditional concert experience.

This album is a testament to the Mishra brothers' musical lineage and their dedication to preserving and evolving the rich traditions of Hindustani classical music. Whether you're seeking spiritual solace or simply appreciate the artistry of exceptional vocalists, "Pandit Rajan & Sajan Mishra: Jugalbandi Duet" offers a profound and enriching listening experience.

      About Rajan & Sajan Mishra

Rajan and Sajan Mishra, the legendary brothers of Indian classical music, are renowned exponents of the khyal style, hailing from the prestigious Banaras gharana. With a career spanning over five decades, they have captivated global audiences with their soulful renditions, earning them prestigious accolades such as the Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Their unique form of sahgayan, transcending the traditional jugalbandi, reflects a profound musical confluence. Beyond khyal, their repertoire includes bhajan, tappa, tarana, and thumri, showcasing their versatility. Based in Rameshnagar, Delhi, they also nurture young talent through their music school, Gurukul Viram, nestled in the serene landscapes between Dehradun and Mussoorie.
