      Album Details

"Out Front" is a seminal 1961 jazz album by the brilliant trumpeter and composer Booker Little, released under the Candid label. This album is a testament to Little's extraordinary talent, showcasing his precise, dramatic, and lyrical playing, as well as his innovative compositions. Recorded in the spring of 1961 at the Nola Penthouse Sound Studios in New York City, the album features a stellar lineup including Julian Priester on trombone, Eric Dolphy on alto sax, bass clarinet, and flute, and Don Friedman on piano.

"Out Front" is widely regarded as Booker Little's magnum opus, blending hard bop, free jazz, and bebop into a cohesive and timeless sound. The album's slow, deliberate tempos allow Little's gorgeous tone to shine, making it a standout in his discography. Tracks like "We Speak," "Strength And Sanity," and "Moods In Free Time" highlight Little's compositional prowess and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz.

Tragically, Booker Little passed away just months before the album's release, adding a poignant layer to this already remarkable work. Eric Dolphy, another jazz legend featured on the album, also passed away a couple of years later. "Out Front" stands as a crucial document of their genius and a pivotal record in the history of jazz. With its precise production and timeless appeal, this album remains a cornerstone of the genre, celebrated for its innovative spirit and enduring influence.

      About Booker Little

Booker Little was a groundbreaking American jazz trumpeter and composer, born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1938. In his tragically short career, spanning just a few years in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Little emerged as a significant figure in the jazz scene, stepping into the void left by the legendary Clifford Brown. His unique sound and prolific output, including notable albums like "Out Front" and the self-titled "Booker Little," showcased his brilliance as both a trumpeter and a composer. Collaborating with jazz greats like Max Roach and Eric Dolphy, Little's contributions to hard bop and free jazz left an indelible mark on the genre. Despite his untimely death at the age of 23, his musical achievements remain astonishing, cementing his legacy as one of jazz's most promising and influential figures.
