      Album Details

"Our Thing," released in May 1964, is the second album by the remarkable jazz tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, following his acclaimed debut "Page One." This Blue Note Records gem showcases Henderson's distinctive sound and his ability to blend various jazz styles, from hard bop and bebop to cool and free jazz. Recorded in September 1963 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, the album features an all-star lineup, including trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Andrew Hill, bassist Eddie Khan, and drummer Pete La Roca.

The album's title, "Our Thing," hints at the innovative spirit of the era, with compositions by both Henderson and Dorham. Henderson contributes "Teeter Totter" and the title track, while Dorham offers "Pedro's Time," "Back Road," and the modal masterpiece "Escapade." The album's diverse tracks range from avant-garde explorations to lively Latin-infused numbers and pacy post-bop compositions, demonstrating the band's versatility and creativity.

"Our Thing" is a testament to Joe Henderson's early genius and his enduring influence on jazz. The album's 2000 remastering, overseen by Rudy Van Gelder, ensures that the music's rich textures and dynamic range are preserved for modern audiences. Whether you're a longtime fan of Henderson or a newcomer to his music, "Our Thing" offers an engaging and rewarding listening experience.
