      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Othmar Schoeck with his compelling works for cello and orchestra. This album showcases two of his most notable compositions: the Cello Concerto, Op. 61, and the Orchestral Suite in A-Flat Major, Op. 59. Schoeck, a Swiss composer known for his rich, expressive compositions, offers a unique blend of romantic and modernist elements that are sure to engage and enthrall.

The Cello Concerto, Op. 61, composed in 1947, is a testament to Schoeck's mastery of the concerto form. The four movements, ranging from the Allegro moderato to the Lento, molto allegro, display a profound understanding of the cello's expressive capabilities. Each movement is a journey through a landscape of emotions, from the tranquil and serene to the energetic and dynamic.

Complementing the concerto is the Orchestral Suite in A-Flat Major, Op. 59, composed in 1945. This five-movement suite is a delightful exploration of various moods and styles. From the majestic Andante maestoso to the lively Presto, each movement offers a unique listening experience. The suite's pastoral and march-like elements provide a refreshing contrast to the concerto's more introspective nature.

Performed by Julius Berger and the South West German Chamber Orchestra, this album is a testament to the skill and artistry of both the soloist and the ensemble. The recording, released in 2002 by EBS, captures the nuances and subtleties of Schoeck's compositions, offering a listening experience that is both engaging and rewarding. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

      About Othmar Schoeck

Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957) was a prominent Swiss composer and conductor, celebrated for his contributions to the late-Romantic era. Born in Brunnen, Schoeck's musical journey was marked by a deep commitment to the art song, or lied, with over 400 songs to his credit. His compositions span a wide range of genres, including operas, choral works, and orchestral pieces, each imbued with a sensuous and stringent style that reflects his German-Austrian influences. Schoeck studied under Max Reger and conducted various choral societies and symphonies throughout his career. Despite his significant contributions, Schoeck remains relatively unknown outside of Switzerland, adding an air of discovery to his music. His works, now increasingly popular, offer a rich exploration of the human experience, making them a captivating addition to any music lover's collection.
