      Album Details

Frank Wess, a revered figure in the jazz world and an NEA Jazz Master, delivers a vibrant and swinging hard bop experience with his 2009 album "Once Is Not Enough." This collection of nine tracks is a testament to Wess's enduring prowess on the tenor sax, backed by an impressive ensemble of nine musicians, including notable names like trumpeter Frank Greene, reedmen Ted Nash and Scott Robinson, and trombonist Steve Turre.

The album kicks off with its title track, a lively and energetic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Wess's distinctive sound is at the forefront, driving the ensemble with his characteristic swing and bluesy phrasing. The tracks that follow showcase a mix of original compositions and well-chosen standards, each one a showcase for Wess's virtuosic playing and the tight, dynamic interplay of the band.

From the tender balladry of "Sara's Song" to the up-tempo exuberance of "Backfire," Wess and his bandmates explore a range of moods and tempos, all united by a shared sense of joy and musicality. The album also features a standout rendition of "Lush Life," a classic tune that Wess imbues with new depth and nuance.

"Once Is Not Enough" is a celebration of the hard bop tradition, with Wess firmly planting his flag in the lineage of greats like Count Basie. The album's dominant sound is one of swinging, good-time blues, a testament to Wess's ability to connect with the essence of the music and deliver it with fresh energy and enthusiasm. Whether you're a longtime fan of Frank Wess or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.
