      Album Details

Dive into the avant-garde world of Olivier Greif with this captivating album, released by Disques Triton in 2010. This collection features two of Greif's most profound works, "Les Plaisirs de Chérence" and "Sonate de Guerre," both performed by the renowned pianist Pascal Amoyel. The album also includes a bonus track, "Sadhana," adding an extra layer of depth to the listening experience.

Olivier Greif, a French composer of Polish-Jewish heritage, brings a unique perspective to his music, influenced by his father's experiences as an Auschwitz survivor. This album is a testament to Greif's ability to blend personal history with avant-garde composition, creating a sound that is both haunting and beautiful.

"Les Plaisirs de Chérence" is a five-movement sonata that explores a range of moods and themes, from the lively "Hallali de Gommecourt" to the introspective "Tombeau de Monsieur de Clachaloze." Each movement is a journey in itself, showcasing Greif's mastery of the piano and his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions.

"Sonate de Guerre," on the other hand, is a powerful three-movement work that reflects the turmoil and conflict of war. The "Allegretto non troppo" opens the sonata with a sense of urgency, while the "Adagio" provides a moment of reflection. The album concludes with the energetic "Toccata," a fitting end to this intense and thought-provoking collection.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 4 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listen. It's a perfect addition to any fan of avant-garde music or those looking to explore the genre. The performances by Pascal Amoyel are nothing short of exceptional, bringing Greif's complex and nuanced compositions to life.

      About Olivier Greif

Olivier Greif, born in Paris in 1950 to Polish-Jewish parents, was a composer whose life and work were deeply influenced by his heritage and personal journey. Greif's father, a survivor of Auschwitz, inspired his son to create powerful Holocaust-themed compositions, such as "Todesfuge" and "Lettres de Westerbork," a song cycle based on the letters of Etty Hillesum. Greif's musical prowess was evident from a young age, leading him to study at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire under notable teachers like Lucette Descaves, Jean Hubeau, and Tony Aubin. His compositions, rooted in the avant-garde genre, reflect his unique perspective and emotional depth. From 1976 onwards, Greif followed the spiritual teachings of Sri Chinmoy, further enriching his artistic expression. Greif's legacy includes impactful works like "Requiem," "Danse des morts," and "Les Chants de l'âme," which continue to resonate with audiences worldwide. His life and music stand as a testament to the enduring power of art in the face of adversity.
