      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Baroque music with "Odes on the Death of Henry Purcell" by The Parley of Instruments. This exquisite album, released in 1992, is a tribute to the legendary English composer Henry Purcell, featuring a collection of odes and instrumental suites that celebrate his enduring legacy. The Parley of Instruments, conducted by Roy Goodman, delivers a performance that is both historically informed and deeply expressive, bringing the music of Purcell and his contemporaries to life with stunning clarity and vitality.

The album opens with a lively dance suite, "Come, Come Along for a Dance and a Song," setting the stage for a journey through the elegance and sophistication of the Baroque era. The centerpiece of the album is the "Suite in G Minor 'Farewell'," a four-movement suite that showcases the ensemble's virtuosity and the composer's mastery of form and expression. Each movement, from the stately Saraband to the lively Bourrée, offers a unique perspective on the musical language of the time.

In addition to the instrumental suites, the album features vocal works by John Blow and Jeremiah Clarke, performed by a stellar cast of singers including Charles Daniels, Peter Holman, and Rogers Covey-Crump. These odes, composed in honor of Purcell, offer a poignant reflection on the loss of a musical genius and the enduring power of his music.

The album concludes with "An Ode on the Death of Mr Henry Purcell," a powerful and moving tribute that underscores the depth of Purcell's influence and the enduring legacy of his music. With its rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and soaring melodies, this ode is a fitting conclusion to an album that pays homage to one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.

"Odes on the Death of Henry Purcell" is a testament to the enduring power of Baroque music and the skill of The Parley of Instruments. With its stunning performances and rich historical context, this album is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the music of the Baroque era. Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a captivating and enriching listening experience.

      About The Parley of Instruments

The Parley of Instruments, founded in 1979 in London, is a distinguished early music ensemble renowned for its commitment to the performance and scholarship of 17th and 18th-century music. Co-founded by the esteemed musicologist Peter Holman and the accomplished violinist Roy Goodman, the group has been led by these two main conductors, ensuring a rich and authentic interpretation of the repertoire. The ensemble takes its name from the historic public concerts organized by the violinist John Banister in London in 1676, connecting modern audiences with the earliest traditions of concert performance. Specializing in string chamber music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, The Parley of Instruments brings together a core of talented musicians, including Judy Tarling and Theresa Caudle on violins, and Mark Caudle on bass viol and cello. Their performances are celebrated for the delicate and refined timbre of their historical string instruments, offering a unique and captivating experience for music enthusiasts.
