      Album Details

Nils Wogram's Root 70 is a seminal album that embodies the spirit of free jazz and jazz, released on 1 January 2001 via nWog Records. This captivating record features a talented quartet, comprising Nils Wogram on trombone, Hayden Chisholm on saxophone, Matt Penman on bass, and Jochen Rückert on drums. The eight-track album boasts an impressive duration of 1 hour and 13 minutes, taking the listener on a sonic journey through the realms of improvisational music.

The tracklist showcases the band's versatility, with pieces like 'Enter the Jade Palace', 'Faces of the Blues', and 'DNA' demonstrating their ability to craft complex, engaging compositions. The album's sound is characterised by its transparent and light acoustic quality, which adds to the overall sense of intimacy and spontaneity.

As a classic jazz quartet without a harmony instrument, Nils Wogram's Root 70 has developed a unique sound that is both refreshing and rooted in tradition. The band's music often focuses on odd meter and quartetone jazz, making for a fascinating listening experience. With 'Root 70', Nils Wogram has created an album that is at once a testament to his skill as a composer and a showcase for the band's impressive musicianship.

Twenty years after its initial release, the album remains a standout in Nils Wogram's discography, and its influence can still be felt in the jazz scene today. The album has been re-released as part of a comprehensive anniversary box set, celebrating the band's enduring legacy and commitment to their craft. 'Root 70' is a must-listen for fans of Nils Wogram and jazz enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the creative vision of one of the genre's most innovative and respected artists.

      About Nils Wogram

Nils Wogram is a virtuoso jazz trombonist, composer, and bandleader hailing from Braunschweig, Germany. Beginning his musical journey at the age of 15 with classical studies, Wogram quickly made a name for himself, joining the National German Youth Big Band and forming his own ensembles. His debut album, "New York Conversations," released in 1994, marked the start of a prolific career that has since seen him release over 20 albums as a bandleader.

Wogram's music is characterized by its originality and the unique ensemble sound of his bands, which he believes are the key to creating exceptional music. His compositions are performed exclusively by his own groups, and he is also sought after by other ensembles for his commissioned pieces. With a preference for "real bands" that have been together for years, Wogram's formations, such as Root 70 and Nostalgia, are known for their distinctive styles and long-standing collaborations.

In addition to his performing and composing work, Wogram is an educator, teaching at the conservatory in Lucerne, Switzerland. He also runs his own record label, nwog-records, which he founded in 2010. Wogram's influence extends across Europe, where he is recognized as one of the most important jazz musicians of his generation. His music, ranging from free jazz to more traditional styles, continues to captivate audiences and inspire fellow musicians.
