Recorded during Al Cohn's late-70s tour of West Africa, coordinated by the U.S. State Department, this album is a testament to the power of live jazz and cultural exchange. Joined by fellow tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell, pianist Dolo Coker, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Frank Butler, Al Cohn delivers a captivating performance that blends cool jazz, hard bop, and bebop elements. The album features five electrifying tracks, including the title track "Night Flight to Dakar," "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," and "The King," all recorded live at the Theatre Nationale Daniel Sorrano in Dakar, Senegal, on March 19, 1980. With its rich history and exceptional musicianship, "Night Flight to Dakar" is a true gem in the jazz canon, offering a unique glimpse into the world of live jazz performance.

      About Al Cohn

      Al Cohn, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1925, was a renowned jazz saxophonist, arranger, and composer whose career spanned over four decades. He rose to fame in the 1940s as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd, where he was part of the celebrated "Four Brothers" saxophone section. Cohn's smooth tenor saxophone style and impeccable arrangements made him a standout figure in the cool jazz and hard bop genres. Throughout his career, he performed with legendary bands led by Henry Jerome, Joe Marsala, Georgie Auld, Alvino Rey, and Buddy Rich, among others. Cohn's compositions were so highly regarded that even Miles Davis recorded an album featuring his works. His legacy endures as a testament to his skill and influence in the jazz world, with his music continuing to captivate audiences.
