      Album Details

Kai Nieminen's 2009 album, "Nieminen, K.: Palomar / Clarinet Concerto, 'Through Shadows I Can Hear Ancient Voices' / Vicoli in Ombra," is a captivating exploration of chamber music that showcases the composer's unique voice and the exceptional talents of the performers involved. The album is a collection of three distinct works, each offering a rich and immersive listening experience.

The album opens with "Palomar," a two-movement piece that paints a vivid sonic landscape. "I. Crepuscolo (Sunset)" and "II. La Notte (Night, Old People and Birds)" evoke the tranquil beauty of twilight and the enigmatic atmosphere of night, respectively. The Clarinet Concerto, titled "Through Shadows I Can Hear Ancient Voices," is a standout piece written in 2002. This concerto is notable for its full, rich writing and features a cadenza by Mikko Raasakka. The concerto is divided into three movements, each with evocative titles: "People who sleep badly…," "The Toilers of the Sea," and "Don't seek and Don't believe." The final piece on the album, "Vicoli in ombra (Alleys in Twilight)," adds a layer of intrigue and depth to the collection.

Performances by Gallois, Raasakka, and Sinfonia Finlandia bring Nieminen's compositions to life with precision and passion. The album's duration of 58 minutes ensures a satisfying and comprehensive journey through Nieminen's musical world. Released under the Naxos label, this album is a testament to Nieminen's skill as a composer and his ability to create engaging, thought-provoking music.
