      Album Details

Discover the enchanting world of Karl Weigl, an Austrian-American composer who masterfully blends the rich Viennese musical tradition with innovative modernist techniques. Released in 2010, "Music of Karl Weigl" is a captivating collection of chamber works that showcase Weigl's unique voice, drawing comparisons to the likes of Zemlinsky, Berg, and Webern. This album features the Iowa String Quartet, along with vocalists Patricia Brooks and Betty Allen, delivering impeccable performances that bring Weigl's compositions to life.

The album opens with "Five Songs for Soprano and String Quartet, Op. 44," a cycle of songs that explores a range of emotions and themes, from solace ("Trost") to the invitation to a Martin's goose feast ("Einladung zur Martinsgans"). Following this, "Three Songs for Alto and String Quartet" delves into themes of summer's end, love, and witchcraft, showcasing Weigl's ability to craft evocative narratives through music.

The centerpiece of the album is the "String Quartet No. 5 in G, Op. 31," a four-movement work that exemplifies Weigl's mastery of the string quartet form. From the serene opening ("Sehr ruhig") to the lively finale ("Allegro comodo"), this quartet is a testament to Weigl's compositional prowess and the Iowa String Quartet's virtuosity.

Spanning 47 minutes, "Music of Karl Weigl" is a journey through the composer's rich musical landscape, offering a glimpse into the world of a man who bridged the gap between the old and new worlds of music. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

      About Karl Weigl

Karl Weigl, born in 1881 in Vienna, was a composer and pianist whose life and work spanned two continents and two world wars. Growing up in the vibrant musical culture of fin-de-siècle Vienna, Weigl studied piano with Alexander Zemlinsky and composition with Robert Fuchs, and even served as a repetiteur under the tutelage of Gustav Mahler. His early career flourished in his hometown, but the rise of Nazism forced him to flee in 1938. Settling in New York, Weigl continued to compose and teach, becoming a naturalized American citizen in 1943. His music, deeply rooted in the Viennese Post-Romantic style, includes a rich body of chamber and orchestral works that are increasingly being rediscovered and recorded. Weigl's personal life was also marked by his marriage to pianist and composer Vally Weigl, with whom he shared a deep artistic connection. Despite the challenges he faced, Weigl's compositions reflect a unique voice that deserves to be explored and celebrated.
