      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical piano with Friedrich Gulda's "Mozart & Gulda Piano Works." This captivating album, released on June 2, 2017, under the BR-Klassik label, is a masterful blend of Mozart's iconic compositions and Gulda's own improvisational brilliance. Spanning just over 54 minutes, the album offers a concise yet profound journey through the realms of classical piano music.

Friedrich Gulda, renowned for his virtuosic talent and innovative approach, brings a fresh perspective to Mozart's timeless pieces. The album opens with a live performance of Mozart's "Rondo in A Major, K. 386," expertly arranged by Alfred Einstein, setting the stage for a series of captivating performances. Gulda's improvisational skills shine through in "Improvisation 1" and "Improvisation 2," showcasing his ability to blend structure and spontaneity seamlessly.

The centerpiece of the album is Mozart's "Piano Sonata No. 10 in C Major, K. 330," performed live in its entirety. Gulda's interpretation of this beloved sonata is both reverent and refreshing, highlighting the intricate beauty of Mozart's composition. The album also features "Play Piano Play: Exercise No. 1," a playful and engaging piece that demonstrates Gulda's versatility as a pianist.

Complementing these works is the "Suite for Piano, E-Piano & Drums: III. Aria (Version for Solo Piano)," performed live, which adds a unique dimension to the album. The suite's aria, adapted for solo piano, showcases Gulda's ability to convey depth and emotion through his playing.

Closing the album is another live performance of Mozart's "Rondo in D Major, K. 382," leaving the listener with a sense of fulfillment and awe. "Mozart & Gulda Piano Works" is a testament to Friedrich Gulda's enduring legacy as a pianist and composer, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience for classical music enthusiasts.

      About Friedrich Gulda

Friedrich Gulda was an Austrian musical maverick, equally at home in the worlds of classical and jazz piano. Born in Vienna in 1930, Gulda began his piano journey at the age of seven and went on to win the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition in 1946. His career was marked by a fearless blending of genres, with a discography that includes not just classical masterpieces like Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas, but also spontaneous jazz improvisations and collaborations with legends like Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea. Gulda's compositions often fused notated music with large improvised sections, reflecting his belief in the power of spontaneity. Known for his eccentric stage personality and unconventional ideas, Gulda earned the nickname 'terrorist-pianist,' challenging musical norms and leaving an indelible mark on both the classical and jazz scenes. His legacy continues to inspire, with his interdisciplinary approach and artistic heritage celebrated through various events and exhibitions.
