Motor City Scene - Thad Jones

      Album Details

In the vibrant jazz scene of 1959, trumpeter Thad Jones delivered a gem with "Motor City Scene," a captivating album that showcases the energy and talent of Detroit's finest musicians. Recorded for United Artists, this release stands out as a unique one-off session, distinct from Jones' classic Blue Note dates, offering a fresh perspective on his artistry.

The album features a stellar lineup, including the legendary Paul Chambers on bass and Tommy Flanagan on piano, with Thad Jones himself on flugelhorn and cornet. The ensemble is rounded out by Al Grey on trombone, Billy Mitchell on tenor sax, and the incomparable Elvin Jones on drums. This powerhouse group delivers a dynamic performance that blends big band, hard bop, and bebop influences, creating a rich and engaging musical experience.

"Motor City Scene" is a testament to Thad Jones' versatility and innovation. The album opens with "Let's Play One," a lively and upbeat track that sets the tone for the rest of the record. "Minor On Top" showcases the band's improvisational skills, while "Like Old Times" offers a more introspective moment. The album concludes with "No Refill," a track that highlights the ensemble's tight playing and individual virtuosity.

With a duration of just over 31 minutes, this album is a concise yet powerful statement from Thad Jones and his all-star band. Whether you're a longtime fan of jazz or a newcomer to the genre, "Motor City Scene" offers a compelling introduction to the talents of Thad Jones and his contemporaries. The remastered tracks from 1997 ensure that the music sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did over six decades ago.

      About Thad Jones

Thad Jones, born in Pontiac, Michigan, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his innovative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from a musical family that included brothers Hank Jones (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums), Thad Jones began his professional career at the tender age of 16 and served in U.S. Army bands during World War II. Throughout his illustrious career, Jones played with jazz legends such as Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and Gil Evans, and led his own big band, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which redefined the sound of modern jazz. His compositions, including the iconic "A Child is Born," are staples of the genre, showcasing his unique blend of hard bop and big band styles. Jones' influence extended beyond his music; he was also one of the first prominent jazz musicians to hold a full-time professorship, teaching at William Paterson University. His legacy as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences worldwide.
