      Album Details

Dive into the rich tapestry of Polish opera with Stanisław Moniuszko's "Flis: The Raftsman," a captivating one-act opera that stands as a testament to the composer's enduring legacy. This 2020 release from The Fryderyk Chopin Institute offers a fresh perspective on Moniuszko's lesser-known yet profoundly moving work, originally premiered in Warsaw in 1858.

"Flis: The Raftsman" is a gem nestled between Moniuszko's more famous operas, "Halk" and "Straszny Dwór." With a libretto by Stanisław Bogusławski, the opera delves into themes of conflict, arranged marriage, and the reunion of estranged brothers, all set against the backdrop of the picturesque Vistula River. The opera's charm lies in its ability to blend beautiful melodies with rich, nationalistic themes, making it a quintessential piece of Polish cultural heritage.

The album features a stellar cast, including Paweł Cichoński as Feliks and Gierlach as Szóstak, accompanied by the Podlaska Opera and Orchestra, and conducted by the renowned Fabio Biondi. The performance is a masterclass in musical storytelling, with each track offering a unique glimpse into the opera's dramatic and lyrical depth. From the stirring "Uwertura: Pędzą chmury, zcichły grzmoty..." to the poignant "Finał: Otóż biedny chłopak w drogę się wybiera," every moment is crafted with precision and passion.

"Flis: The Raftsman" is not just an opera; it's an experience that transports you to the heart of Poland's musical tradition. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album promises an hour of enchanting music that celebrates the timeless artistry of Stanisław Moniuszko.

      About Stanisław Moniuszko

Stanisław Moniuszko, born in Ubiel, near Minsk, in 1819, is celebrated as the father of Polish national opera. His compositions, deeply rooted in Polish folk music and national themes, have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Poland and beyond. Moniuszko's journey began with his family's move to Warsaw, where he first encountered Polish folk music, sparking a lifelong passion for integrating these elements into his work. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively across Europe, learning from and collaborating with some of the most renowned composers of his time, including Glinka, Liszt, Mussorgsky, and Rossini.

Moniuszko's most famous works include the operas "Halka" and "The Haunted Manor," both of which are beloved for their patriotic and folkloric themes. His contributions to Polish music extend beyond opera, encompassing a wide range of art songs, operettas, ballets, and incidental works. Despite facing censorship and repression under Russian rule, Moniuszko's music continued to inspire and uplift the Polish people, earning him recognition as a national treasure.

In addition to his composing, Moniuszko was a dedicated conductor, organist, and pedagogue, passing on his knowledge and passion to future generations of musicians. His influence on Polish music is immeasurable, and his legacy continues to be celebrated, with 2019 marking the 200th anniversary of his birth. Moniuszko's music is a testament to his deep love for his country and its people, making his compositions timeless treasures that resonate with audiences to this day.
