      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and evocative compositions of Nikolai Myaskovsky with this captivating album, released on October 29, 2013, under the Cambria label. Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, this collection showcases Myaskovsky's mastery of the cello through a series of concertos and sonatas, each piece a testament to his intricate and expressive musical language.

The album opens with the Cello Concerto in C Minor, Op. 66, featuring the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Konstantin Krimetz, with Ovidiu Marinescu on the cello. This concerto, divided into two movements, begins with a haunting "Lento ma non troppo" and transitions into a lively "Allegro vivace," demonstrating Myaskovsky's ability to blend depth and dynamism.

Following the concerto, the album delves into Myaskovsky's sonatas for cello and piano. The Cello Sonata No. 1 in D Major, Op. 12, performed by Ovidiu Marinescu and Kenneth Boulton, starts with a serene "Adagio" and evolves into an impassioned "Allegro passionato - Adagio." The Cello Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 81, also performed by Marinescu and Boulton, comprises three movements: an "Allegro moderato," an "Andante cantabile," and an "Allegro con spirito," each offering a unique emotional and technical journey.

Born in Khoruzhevka, Ukraine, Myaskovsky's aristocratic background and military education in St. Petersburg influenced his musical style, which is characterized by its rich harmonies and complex structures. This album is a celebration of his enduring legacy, offering a comprehensive exploration of his cello repertoire. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Myaskovsky's work, this album promises a rich and rewarding listening experience.
