      Album Details

Dive into the rich world of Italian opera with Saverio Mercadante's "Mercadante: Sinfonie da opere," a captivating collection of overtures that showcase the composer's mastery of orchestral writing. Released in 2013, this album features the Orchestra Sinfonica Moldova, conducted by Silvano Frontalina, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance of Mercadante's dramatic and lyrical compositions.

Saverio Mercadante, often overshadowed by his contemporaries like Rossini and Donizetti, was a prolific composer of operas in the early 19th century. This album offers a unique opportunity to explore his lesser-known works, with overtures from operas such as "Elena da Feltre," "I normanni a Parigi," and "La schiava saracena." Each piece is a testament to Mercadante's skill in crafting memorable melodies and dynamic orchestrations.

The album opens with the stirring overture to "Elena da Feltre," setting the stage for a journey through Mercadante's operatic world. The overture to "I normanni a Parigi" follows, showcasing the composer's ability to blend drama and lyricism. The remaining overtures, from "Nitocri," "La schiava saracena," "Il reggente," and "Gli sciti," each offer a unique glimpse into Mercadante's compositional style, from the grand and dramatic to the intimate and lyrical.

In addition to the overtures, the album also includes "Melodia per quattro violoncelli," a beautiful and serene piece that provides a contrast to the dramatic overtures. This piece showcases Mercadante's versatility as a composer, highlighting his ability to write for smaller ensembles as well as large orchestras.

"Mercadante: Sinfonie da opere" is a delightful exploration of Saverio Mercadante's operatic works, offering a unique perspective on the composer's contributions to the world of Italian opera. With its engaging performances and high-quality recording, this album is a valuable addition to any classical music collection.

      About Saverio Mercadante

Saverio Mercadante, born Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, was a prolific Italian composer who left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Though his fame may not have endured internationally like that of his contemporaries Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, or Gioachino Rossini, Mercadante's contributions to operatic structures, melodic styles, and orchestration were instrumental in shaping the dramatic techniques that Giuseppe Verdi would later build upon. Born in Altamura, Italy, in 1795, Mercadante studied a variety of instruments in Naples before focusing on composition. His works, particularly his operas, reflect his inspiration from French grand opéra, notably the works of Meyerbeer and Halévy. Mercadante's prolific output and innovative approaches make him a key transitional figure in the evolution of Italian opera between the bel canto era and the verismo movement.
