      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and sacred compositions of Saverio Mercadante with the album "Le sette ultime parole di Nostro Signore - Requiem breve." This captivating collection, released on August 1, 2013, under the Bongiovanni label, showcases Mercadante's mastery of chamber music, offering a deeply moving and spiritual experience.

The album is divided into two main sections: "Le sette ultime parole di Nostro Signore," which translates to "The Seven Last Words of Our Lord," and "Requiem breve." The first part is a series of musical reflections on the seven last phrases attributed to Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, each word explored through the voices of soloists and chorus. The second part, "Requiem breve," is a concise yet powerful setting of the traditional Requiem Mass, encompassing the Introitus, Sequenza, Offertorium, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Communio, and Responsorium.

Performances are brought to life by a talented ensemble including Turchetta, Viri, Pavan, Miranda, and Scapin, with the Laudis Cantores chorus providing a rich and resonant backdrop. The album's duration of 57 minutes ensures a comprehensive exploration of Mercadante's profound and introspective compositions.

Saverio Mercadante, an Italian composer born in 1795, was a contemporary of Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini, and his works are celebrated for their emotional depth and technical brilliance. This album is a testament to his enduring legacy, offering a poignant and reflective journey through some of his most sacred and moving music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a deeply enriching and spiritually uplifting experience.

      About Saverio Mercadante

Saverio Mercadante, born Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, was a prolific Italian composer who left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Though his fame may not have endured internationally like that of his contemporaries Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, or Gioachino Rossini, Mercadante's contributions to operatic structures, melodic styles, and orchestration were instrumental in shaping the dramatic techniques that Giuseppe Verdi would later build upon. Born in Altamura, Italy, in 1795, Mercadante studied a variety of instruments in Naples before focusing on composition. His works, particularly his operas, reflect his inspiration from French grand opéra, notably the works of Meyerbeer and Halévy. Mercadante's prolific output and innovative approaches make him a key transitional figure in the evolution of Italian opera between the bel canto era and the verismo movement.
