      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Saverio Mercadante's "Flute Concertos & Sinfonia on Themes from Rossini's Stabat Mater," a timeless masterpiece released in 1973 under the Warner Classics International label. This exquisite collection of chamber music showcases Mercadante's virtuosity and the unparalleled artistry of flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, conductor Claudio Scimone, and the renowned I Solisti Veneti orchestra.

The album features three complete flute concertos, each a gem in its own right. The Concerto in D major opens with a graceful Andante, followed by a lively Allegro and a brilliant Polacca. The Concerto in E major begins with a majestic Adagio maestoso, transitions into a serene Largo, and culminates in a sparkling Polacca brillante. The Concerto in E minor, known as Concerto No. 2, starts with an Allegro maestoso, flows into a poignant Largo, and concludes with a spirited Rondo.

      About Saverio Mercadante

Saverio Mercadante, born Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, was a prolific Italian composer who left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Though his fame may not have endured internationally like that of his contemporaries Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, or Gioachino Rossini, Mercadante's contributions to operatic structures, melodic styles, and orchestration were instrumental in shaping the dramatic techniques that Giuseppe Verdi would later build upon. Born in Altamura, Italy, in 1795, Mercadante studied a variety of instruments in Naples before focusing on composition. His works, particularly his operas, reflect his inspiration from French grand opéra, notably the works of Meyerbeer and Halévy. Mercadante's prolific output and innovative approaches make him a key transitional figure in the evolution of Italian opera between the bel canto era and the verismo movement.
