      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 64, presented in a unique dual-performance format. This album, released on Compare Edition in 2014, offers a captivating comparison between two legendary violinists, Nathan Milstein and Arthur Grumiaux, each delivering their own interpretation of Mendelssohn's masterpiece.

Recorded in 1953 with the Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of Artur Rodziński, Milstein's performance is a testament to his virtuosic technique and profound musicality. Grumiaux, on the other hand, brings a distinctive sensitivity and lyricism to the concerto, recorded with the Philharmonia String Orchestra conducted by Boris Ord.

The album spans a total of 51 minutes, divided into three movements: the impassioned Allegro molto appassionato, the serene Andante, and the lively Allegretto non troppo - Allegro molto vivace. Mendelssohn's concerto, composed in 1844, is celebrated for its perfect blend of technical brilliance and emotional depth, making it a cornerstone of the violin repertoire.

This release is not just a musical comparison but also a historical document, showcasing the evolution of interpretation and performance style. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album provides a fascinating insight into the artistry of two of the 20th century's most celebrated violinists, each bringing their unique voice to Mendelssohn's enduring work.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range.
