      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Felix Mendelssohn's violin concertos with this captivating album, released on Hyperion in 2012. This collection showcases two of Mendelssohn's most celebrated works: the Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, and the Violin Concerto in D Minor, MWV O3. The E Minor Concerto, premiered in 1845, is now recognized as a masterpiece and remains one of the most frequently performed violin concertos of all time. The D Minor Concerto, though less known, is equally enchanting, filled with Mendelssohn's signature freshness and lightness of touch.

The album opens with the passionate and dramatic first movement of the E Minor Concerto, followed by the serene and lyrical second movement. The third movement is a lively and virtuosic display of Mendelssohn's compositional genius. The D Minor Concerto follows, with its own unique charm and depth. The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, also known as "Fingal's Cave," is included as a bonus track, adding a touch of Mendelssohn's orchestral brilliance to the collection.

Performing these works are some of the most talented musicians of our time, including Mayumi Seiler on violin and Richard Hickox conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The album's duration is a concise 56 minutes, making it a perfect addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Mendelssohn or new to his music, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
