      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Felix Mendelssohn with this captivating album, released in 2014 by Chandos Records. This collection showcases Mendelssohn's mastery of classical composition, featuring his renowned Symphony No. 4 "Italian" and Symphony No. 5 "Reformation," along with the evocative overture "The Hebrides."

The "Italian" Symphony, composed in 1833, is a vibrant and lively piece that captures the essence of Mendelssohn's travels through Italy. Each movement is a testament to his keen observation and vivid imagination, transporting you to the sun-drenched landscapes and bustling streets of the Italian countryside.

In contrast, the "Reformation" Symphony, completed in 1830, is a more solemn and reflective work. Commissioned to commemorate the tercentenary of the Lutheran Reformation, this symphony is a powerful and stirring tribute to the historical and religious significance of the event.

"The Hebrides" overture, also known as "Fingal's Cave," is a breathtaking piece inspired by Mendelssohn's visit to the Scottish Hebrides islands. The overture beautifully captures the rugged beauty and dramatic landscapes of the islands, making it a standout piece in this collection.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Mendelssohn's genius, offering a rich and diverse listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah."
