      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Felix Mendelssohn's early genius with the album "Mendelssohn: String Symphonies Nos. 8, 9 & 10." This remarkable collection, performed by the acclaimed Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and released in 1993 under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, showcases three of Mendelssohn's most enchanting string symphonies. Composed during his formative years, these symphonies offer a fascinating glimpse into the burgeoning talent of one of classical music's most celebrated figures.

The album begins with the String Symphony No. 8 in D Major, a work that exudes a youthful exuberance and charm. The Adagio e grave introduction gives way to a lively Allegro, setting the stage for the Adagio's introspective beauty and the Menuetto's playful energy. The symphony concludes with an Allegro molto that is both spirited and refined.

Next, the String Symphony No. 9 in C Major unfolds with a Grave introduction that gradually blossoms into a radiant Allegro. The Andante movement is a study in elegance and grace, while the Scherzo introduces a delightful sense of whimsy. The symphony reaches its triumphant climax with an Allegro vivace that is both exhilarating and sophisticated.

The album concludes with the String Symphony No. 10 in B Minor, a work that reveals Mendelssohn's growing maturity and depth. The Adagio introduction sets a contemplative mood, which is contrasted by the Allegro's dynamic energy. The Più presto finale is a tour de force of technical brilliance and emotional intensity.

Spanning a total of 66 minutes, this album is a testament to Mendelssohn's enduring legacy and the timeless appeal of his music. Whether you are a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this collection promises a rewarding and enriching listening experience.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
