      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of classical piano with Samson François's 2010 album, "Mendelssohn: Songs Without Words & Rondo capriccioso - Mozart: Variations on 'Ah ! vous dirai-je, maman'." This captivating collection, released under Warner Classics, brings together the timeless compositions of Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, offering a delightful blend of elegance and virtuosity.

The album opens with Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words," a series of lyrical piano pieces that evoke a range of emotions and landscapes. François's masterful interpretation of these works showcases Mendelssohn's unique ability to convey profound sentiments through instrumental music alone. The "Rondo capriccioso" adds a touch of playful brilliance to the collection, highlighting François's technical prowess and musical sensitivity.

The second half of the album features Mozart's "12 Variations on 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman'," a charming set of variations based on a popular French folk tune. François's performance brings out the wit and grace of Mozart's composition, demonstrating the composer's genius in transforming a simple melody into a sophisticated and engaging piece.

With a total duration of just over 22 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the world of classical piano for both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts. François's impeccable playing and deep understanding of the music make this a truly memorable listening experience. Whether you're in the mood for something soothing or something lively, this album has something to offer.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.
