      Album Details

Dive into the rich musical heritage of Felix Mendelssohn with "Mendelssohn in Birmingham, Vol. 2," a captivating collection of his symphonic works performed by the esteemed City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Edward Gardner. Released in 2014 on the Chandos label, this album spans a little over an hour and fourteen minutes, offering a profound exploration of Mendelssohn's early and later symphonic masterpieces.

The album opens with the dramatic and powerful "Ruy Blas, Op. 95, MWV P15 (Revised 1844)," followed by a complete performance of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 11, MWV N 13. This symphony, composed when Mendelssohn was just a teenager, showcases his precocious talent and innovative approach to the symphonic form. The four movements, from the fiery "Allegro di molto" to the exhilarating "Allegro con fuoco," are performed with precision and passion.

The second half of the album features Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 56, MWV N18, also known as the "Scottish Symphony." Inspired by Mendelssohn's travels to Scotland, this symphony is a vivid musical depiction of the Scottish landscape and folklore. The four movements, including the haunting "Adagio," are brought to life with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's signature blend of technical brilliance and expressive depth.

This album is a testament to Mendelssohn's enduring legacy and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's commitment to performing his works with the highest standards of artistry and scholarship. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Mendelssohn's music, this album offers a rewarding and enriching listening experience.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.
