      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless masterpiece of Felix Mendelssohn with the release of "Elijah, Op. 70." This orchestral and choral work, composed in the 19th century, is a profound exploration of the biblical story of the prophet Elijah. Recorded in 1989 by the esteemed Chandos label, this album captures the grandeur and depth of Mendelssohn's composition with a duration of over two hours.

The album features the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Richard Hickox, alongside a stellar cast of vocalists including Willard White, Rosalind Plowright, and Arthur Davies. The intricate interplay between the orchestra and the choir creates a rich tapestry of sound that brings Mendelssohn's vision to life. The choral arrangements are particularly noteworthy, showcasing the power and precision of the London Symphony Orchestra's choral section.

"Elijah, Op. 70" is divided into two parts, each containing a series of movements that narrate the story of Elijah. The first part begins with an introduction and overture, setting the stage for the dramatic and spiritual journey that follows. Highlights include the choral pieces, such as "No. 1, Chorus" and "No. 9, Chorus," which are both powerful and moving. The second part continues the narrative with a series of recitatives, arias, and chorales, culminating in a quartet and a final chorus that leave a lasting impression.

This album is a testament to Mendelssohn's genius and the enduring appeal of his music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Elijah, Op. 70" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The combination of Mendelssohn's compositional brilliance, the London Symphony Orchestra's virtuosity, and the Chandos label's commitment to high-quality recordings makes this album a standout in the classical music repertoire.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
