      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Felix Mendelssohn's masterful compositions with this exquisite collection of his Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2. Recorded in 1976 and released under the Warner Classics label, this album showcases the profound artistry and technical brilliance of Mendelssohn, a composer who seamlessly bridged the classical and romantic eras.

The album features two of Mendelssohn's most celebrated works for cello and piano: the Cello Sonata No. 1 in B-Flat Major, Op. 45, and the Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58. Each sonata is a testament to Mendelssohn's ability to craft intricate, expressive pieces that highlight the rich, resonant tones of the cello. The performances are brought to life by the virtuoso Frédéric Lodéon on cello and Daria Hovora on piano, who together deliver a captivating interpretation of these iconic works.

The Cello Sonata No. 1, composed in 1838, is known for its lyrical beauty and technical demands, while the Cello Sonata No. 2, completed in 1843, is celebrated for its ebullient, virtuosic character. Together, these sonatas offer a comprehensive exploration of Mendelssohn's compositional genius and his enduring influence on the classical music canon.

With a total duration of 44 minutes, this album is a perfect addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection. Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a newcomer to the world of chamber music, this recording of Mendelssohn's Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2 promises an enriching and enjoyable listening experience.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.
