      Album Details

Felix Mendelssohn's 'Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Vergessene Lieder' is a captivating collection of forgotten songs, showcasing the composer's mastery of chamber music and classical piano. Released on 1 December 2010 by Farao Classics, this album features a range of emotive and expressive pieces, including 'Sicheln schallen, Ähren fallen', 'Ich denke dein', and 'Lied ohne Worte'. With a duration of 1 hour and 3 minutes, the album takes the listener on a journey through Mendelssohn's lesser-known works, highlighting his skill as a composer of choral and classical music.

Performed by Klaus Mertens and Gitti Pirner, and recorded in the Kupferhaus Planegg, Germany, this album is a testament to Mendelssohn's enduring legacy. As the last great 19th-century composer to have his works fully catalogued, this collection helps to fill a significant gap in his discography. The album's release coincided with the Mendelssohn anniversary year of 2009, which saw the publication of the Leipzig Edition of his works, finally bringing his complete oeuvre to light.

With its beautiful and intricate arrangements, 'Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Vergessene Lieder' is a must-listen for fans of classical music and those looking to discover more of Mendelssohn's hidden gems. The album's genres, including chamber music, classical, and classical piano, are all expertly woven together to create a cohesive and engaging listening experience. Felix Mendelssohn's music has been rediscovered and reappreciated in recent years, and this album is a wonderful example of his talent and artistry.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
