      Album Details

Dive into the vibrant world of jazz with Thad Jones' "Mean What You Say," a timeless album that captures the essence of hard bop and big band brilliance. Recorded in early 1966 and released under the Original Jazz Classics label, this album is a testament to Jones' mastery of the flügelhorn and his collaborative genius with baritonist Pepper Adams. The Thad Jones/Pepper Adams Quintet delivers a powerful set of eight tracks, each one a masterclass in jazz composition and performance.

From the swinging rhythms of "Mean What You Say" to the sultry tones of "Bossa Nova Ova," this album is a journey through the rich tapestry of jazz. The quintet's chemistry is palpable, with each member contributing to the album's dynamic sound. Thad Jones' flügelhorn soars above the ensemble, while Pepper Adams' baritone sax adds depth and warmth. The album's standout tracks, "Wives and Lovers" and "Yes Sir That's My Baby," showcase the quintet's ability to blend classic jazz standards with their unique style.

"Mean What You Say" is not just an album; it's a snapshot of a pivotal moment in jazz history. Recorded over three sessions in April and May 1966, the album predates Thad Jones' later work with the Mel Lewis Orchestra, offering a glimpse into the early days of his career. The album's reissue under the OJC imprint ensures that this classic set remains accessible to jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

With a duration of just 40 minutes, "Mean What You Say" is a concise yet powerful exploration of jazz. Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. So, grab your headphones and prepare to be transported to the smoky jazz clubs of the 1960s with Thad Jones and the Pepper Adams Quintet.

      About Thad Jones

Thad Jones, born in Pontiac, Michigan, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his innovative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from a musical family that included brothers Hank Jones (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums), Thad Jones began his professional career at the tender age of 16 and served in U.S. Army bands during World War II. Throughout his illustrious career, Jones played with jazz legends such as Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and Gil Evans, and led his own big band, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which redefined the sound of modern jazz. His compositions, including the iconic "A Child is Born," are staples of the genre, showcasing his unique blend of hard bop and big band styles. Jones' influence extended beyond his music; he was also one of the first prominent jazz musicians to hold a full-time professorship, teaching at William Paterson University. His legacy as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences worldwide.
