      Album Details

Frank Peter Zimmermann, one of today's most celebrated violinists, presents a captivating exploration of Central European classical music with his album "Martinů: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 - Bartók: Sonata for Solo Violin." Released on November 6, 2020, under the BIS label, this album is a testament to Zimmermann's virtuosity and his affinity for both classic and contemporary works.

The album features two violin concertos by Bohuslav Martinů, a Czech composer known for his neo-classical style. The first concerto, composed in 1933, was thought lost for nearly 30 years before its first performance in 1973. The second concerto, composed in 1943, showcases Martinů's evolution as a composer. Zimmermann's interpretation of these concertos is nothing short of breathtaking, with his playing described as if he has known these pieces all his life.

Complementing the Martinů concertos is Béla Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin, a challenging and technically demanding piece that Zimmermann tackles with remarkable skill. The sonata is a prime example of Bartók's unique blend of folk music influences and modernist techniques.

Zimmermann is accompanied by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jakub Hrůša, in the Martinů concertos. The collaboration results in a harmonious blend of Zimmermann's exceptional violin playing and the orchestra's rich, expressive sound. The album spans 10 tracks and a duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, offering a substantial and engaging listening experience.

This album is not just a showcase of Zimmermann's technical prowess but also a journey through the diverse landscapes of Central European classical music. It's a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast and a testament to the enduring power of these remarkable compositions.
