      Album Details

Dive into the heart of 1960s jazz with Charles Lloyd's "Manhattan Stories," a captivating live album that brings together a powerhouse quartet in two historic New York City performances. Recorded in 1965 at the now-defunct Judson Hall and Slug's Saloon, these tracks offer a rare glimpse into a pivotal moment in jazz history, showcasing Lloyd's extraordinary talent on saxophone and flute alongside three legendary musicians: guitarist Gábor Szabó, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Pete LaRoca.

"Manhattan Stories" features six tracks that blend the spontaneity and energy of live performances with the intricate compositions that define Charles Lloyd's unique style. From the upbeat "Sweet Georgia Bright" to the introspective "How Can I Tell You," each song reveals the depth and versatility of this remarkable quartet. The album's standout moments include the mesmerizing "Lady Gabor," performed at both venues, and the blues-infused "Slugs' Blues," which captures the raw energy of the Slug's Saloon gig.

This two-disc set is a treasure trove for jazz enthusiasts, offering previously unreleased performances that highlight the chemistry and improvisational prowess of the quartet. The album's release in 2014 by Resonance Records is a testament to the enduring legacy of Charles Lloyd and his contemporaries, providing a window into the vibrant jazz scene of 1960s New York City. Whether you're a longtime fan of Charles Lloyd or a newcomer to his music, "Manhattan Stories" is an essential addition to any jazz collection, celebrating the artistry and innovation of one of the genre's most influential figures.
