Born in Sydney, Williamson's musical journey began at the age of 11 when he enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium for instrumental tuition, later delving into composition studies. His career took him to the United Kingdom, where he eventually became the Master of the Queen's Music from 1975 until his passing in 2003, making him the only non-British composer to hold this prestigious position.
