      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Albéric Magnard's chamber music with this exquisite album, featuring his Cello Sonata in A Major, Op. 20, and Piano Trio in F Minor, Op. 18. Magnard, a French composer influenced by César Franck and Vincent d'Indy, offers a unique blend of German and French musical traditions, creating a sound that is both intimate and profound.

The Cello Sonata, composed between 1908 and 1910, is a four-movement journey that showcases Magnard's mastery of the cello and piano duo. The sonata begins with "Sans lenteur - Alla zingarese," a lively and rhythmic movement that sets the stage for the introspective "Sans faiblir." The third movement, "Funèbre," is a hauntingly beautiful elegy, while the final movement, "Rondement," brings the sonata to a triumphant close.

The Piano Trio in F Minor, Op. 18, is another four-movement work that highlights Magnard's ability to create complex and nuanced musical landscapes. The trio begins with "Sombre - Clair - Animé," a movement that shifts from darkness to light and back again. The second movement, "Chantant - Léger - Dramatique - Limpide," is a study in contrasts, while the third movement, "Vif - Attaques IV," is a lively and energetic scherzo. The final movement, "Largement - Vif - Largement - Vif - Double plus vif - Large - Vif - Double plus lent - Sans presser - Large," is a tour-de-force that brings the trio to a thrilling conclusion.

Performed by the talented trio of Xavier Phillips on cello, Hüseyin Sermet on piano, and Régis Pasquier on violin, this album is a testament to Magnard's enduring legacy as a composer. With a total runtime of 1 hour and 2 minutes, this album is a must-listen for anyone interested in exploring the rich and diverse world of classical music.

      About Albéric Magnard

Albéric Magnard, born in Paris in 1865, was a French composer whose life and work were marked by both tragedy and heroism. Influenced by César Franck and Vincent d'Indy, Magnard created a body of work that includes operas, chamber music, and orchestral pieces. His reclusive nature and eccentric tendencies kept him from widespread fame during his lifetime, but his compositions have since gained appreciation for their depth and originality. Magnard's life took a dramatic turn in 1914 when he became a national hero, defending his home against German forces during World War I. His legacy endures, with his music celebrated for its emotional resonance and technical mastery.
