      Album Details

Dive into the vibrant world of hard bop with Thad Jones' debut album, "Mad Thad," a classic jazz record that has stood the test of time. Released in 1957 on Period Records, this album is a testament to Thad Jones' extraordinary talent as a trumpeter and composer.

"Mad Thad" is a collection of seven captivating tracks that showcase Jones' mastery of the hard bop genre. The album opens with the upbeat "Jumpin' For Jane," setting the tone for the energetic and swinging compositions that follow. The title track, "Mad Thad," and its sequel, "Mad Thad Pt. 2," are standout pieces that highlight Jones' unique style and virtuosity. Other notable tracks include the melodic "Bird Song" and the playful "Cat Meets Chick."

Recorded in late 1956 and early 1957, the album features performances from two distinct sessions. The first session, a quintet date in December 1956, includes two tracks arranged and conducted by the legendary Quincy Jones. The second session, a sextet date in January 1957, features an expanded lineup that adds depth and richness to the sound.

With a duration of just over 41 minutes, "Mad Thad" is a concise yet powerful exploration of hard bop jazz. The album's blend of big band, hard bop, jazz, and bebop influences creates a dynamic and engaging listening experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of Thad Jones or a newcomer to his music, "Mad Thad" is an essential addition to any jazz collection.

      About Thad Jones

Thad Jones, born in Pontiac, Michigan, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his innovative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from a musical family that included brothers Hank Jones (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums), Thad Jones began his professional career at the tender age of 16 and served in U.S. Army bands during World War II. Throughout his illustrious career, Jones played with jazz legends such as Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and Gil Evans, and led his own big band, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which redefined the sound of modern jazz. His compositions, including the iconic "A Child is Born," are staples of the genre, showcasing his unique blend of hard bop and big band styles. Jones' influence extended beyond his music; he was also one of the first prominent jazz musicians to hold a full-time professorship, teaching at William Paterson University. His legacy as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences worldwide.
