      Album Details

Edward MacDowell's "Macdowell: Piano Sonata No. 4 / 6 Poems / 12 Virtuoso Studies" is a captivating journey through the composer's diverse and expressive piano works. Released in 1995 under the Marco-Polo label, this album showcases MacDowell's mastery of form, emotion, and technical virtuosity. The collection spans a variety of styles and moods, from the dramatic and powerful to the delicate and introspective.

The album opens with the Piano Sonata No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 59, "Keltic," a work that exemplifies MacDowell's ability to blend Celtic influences with classical sonata form. The three movements of this sonata—"With great powers and dignity," "With naive tenderness," and "Very swift and fierce"—offer a rich tapestry of emotions and technical challenges.

Following the sonata, the album presents "Forgotten Fairy Tales, Op. 4," a suite of four pieces that draw inspiration from fairy tales and folklore. Each movement, with its unique character and charm, transports the listener to a world of imagination and wonder.

The "6 Poems after Heine, Op. 31" further highlight MacDowell's lyrical and expressive prowess. These pieces, inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine, range from the soothing and gentle to the tempestuous and dramatic, showcasing the composer's ability to convey a wide spectrum of emotions through music.

The album concludes with the "12 Virtuoso Etudes, Op. 46," a collection of etudes that are both technically demanding and musically rewarding. Each etude explores different aspects of piano technique and musical expression, from the energetic and playful to the introspective and lyrical.

Throughout the album, MacDowell's innovative use of thematic development, motivic connections, and colorful chromaticism is evident, reflecting his disciplined approach to composition. Whether you're a fan of classical piano music or simply looking to explore the works of a master composer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
