      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the French Baroque with Jean-Baptiste Lully's masterful opera, "Armide." This 2008 release from Naxos is a testament to Lully's prowess as the preeminent musician at the court of Louis XIV, marking the pinnacle of his illustrious career. "Armide" is an opera in five acts, with a libretto by Philippe Quinault, drawn from Torquato Tasso's epic poem "La Gerusalemme liberata."

Experience the opulence and intrigue of 17th-century French opera through this meticulously crafted recording. The opera unfolds over 28 tracks, spanning a duration of 2 hours and 1 minute, offering a comprehensive journey through Lully's enchanting score. From the stirring overture to the dramatic arias and choral pieces, each track is a testament to Lully's genius and the rich musical heritage of the Baroque era.

"Armide" is not just an opera; it is a historical and cultural artifact that transports you to the lavish courts of Louis XIV. The opera's narrative, centered around the enchantress Armide and the knight Renaud, is brought to life through Lully's evocative music and Quinault's poetic libretto. The 2008 production, directed by Robert Carsen at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, adds a layer of modern interpretation to this timeless work, bridging the gap between past and present.

Whether you are a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Armide" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The opera's blend of dramatic storytelling, lush orchestration, and vocal virtuosity makes it a standout in the Baroque repertoire. Dive into the world of Jean-Baptiste Lully and discover the enduring appeal of "Armide."

      About Jean-Baptiste Lully

Jean-Baptiste Lully, born in Florence in 1632, was a titan of French Baroque music, despite his Italian roots. His life's work was deeply intertwined with the opulent court of Louis XIV, where he served as a composer, dancer, and instrumentalist. Lully's influence was so profound that he effectively controlled French court music from 1662 onwards, and his style resonated throughout Europe. He is renowned for his operas and his collaborations with the playwright Molière on numerous comédie-ballets, including the iconic "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme."

Lully's contributions to music are vast, with over 40 ballets and a significant body of sacred music to his name. He is credited with founding the French opera genre, creating a unique style of musical declamation that perfectly suited the French language. His tragic death in 1687, resulting from an infection caused by a conducting stick, only adds to the dramatic narrative of his life. Lully's legacy endures, making him a pivotal figure in the history of European music.
