      Album Details

Reza Vali's "Longing - Chamber Music of Reza Vali" is a captivating collection of 18 tracks, spanning a little over an hour and ten minutes, released under the MSR Classics label in October 2019. This album is a testament to Vali's mastery of chamber music, showcasing his unique compositional voice and deep cultural roots.

The album opens with "Three Romantic Songs for Violin and Piano," a trio of pieces that blend classical elegance with romantic expressiveness. The violin and piano duo continues with "Love Drunk (Folk Songs, Set No. 16B)," a four-movement suite that draws inspiration from Persian folk melodies, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing.

Vali's exploration of traditional Persian music is further evident in works like "Âshoob (Calligraphy No.14)" and "Raak (Calligraphy No.15)," performed by a string quartet. These pieces incorporate elements of Persian calligraphy and poetry, translating them into a rich tapestry of sound.

The centerpiece of the album is "Ormavi (String Quartet No. 4)," a substantial eight-movement work that demonstrates Vali's ability to weave complex structures with profound emotional resonance. Each movement, from the introspective "Hisar" to the lively "Hora," offers a distinct mood and character, reflecting Vali's diverse musical influences.

Performed by the Carpe Diem String Quartet, Dariush Saghafi on santoor, violinist Charles Wetherbee, and pianist David Korevaar, the album benefits from the expertise of these renowned musicians, who bring Vali's compositions to life with sensitivity and virtuosity.

"Longing - Chamber Music of Reza Vali" is a compelling journey through the composer's musical landscape, offering a blend of classical sophistication and Persian cultural heritage. It's an album that invites repeated listening, revealing new layers of depth and beauty with each play.
