      Album Details

Live at the Bee Hive captures a historic performance by the legendary jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown and drummer Max Roach, recorded live at the Bee Hive in Chicago on November 7, 1955. This album, released in 1979 by Columbia/Legacy, offers a rare glimpse into the electrifying energy and virtuosity of Brown and Roach during their prime. The six-track album spans a variety of jazz styles, including hard bop, bebop, and cool jazz, showcasing the dynamic interplay between Brown's luminous trumpet and Roach's masterful drumming.

Despite the less-than-ideal recording quality, which has been noted as a drawback, the album is a treasure trove for jazz enthusiasts. Tracks like "I'll Remember April," "Walkin'," and "Cherokee" highlight Brown's technical brilliance and innovative approach to jazz. The extended performances, particularly the two-part rendition of "I'll Remember April," offer a deep dive into the improvisational genius of these jazz pioneers.

Clifford Brown's Live at the Bee Hive is not just a collection of songs but a testament to a pivotal moment in jazz history. The album's duration of 1 hour and 36 minutes provides a substantial and immersive listening experience, making it a valuable addition to any jazz collection. Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado or a curious newcomer, this album offers a unique opportunity to witness the magic of Clifford Brown and Max Roach in action.

      About Clifford Brown

Clifford Brown, born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1930, was a prodigious jazz trumpeter whose brief career left an indelible mark on the genre. Known for his lyrical playing, clear tone, and exceptional technique, Brown quickly rose to prominence in the bebop and hard bop scenes. Influenced by the great Fats Navarro, he possessed a warm, rich sound and a deep understanding of jazz harmony. His collaborations, notably with drummer Max Roach, resulted in seminal works like the 1954 album "Clifford Brown & Max Roach." Despite his untimely death in a car crash at the age of 25 in 1956, Brown's innovative style and emotional depth continue to inspire musicians and captivate audiences. His legacy as one of the greatest trumpeters in jazz history endures, celebrated for his unique voice and the profound impact he made in just a few short years.
