      Album Details

"Live at Cafe Montmartre 1966, Vol. 2" by Don Cherry is a captivating journey into the world of free jazz and avant-garde, captured during a historic performance at Copenhagen's Café Montmartre in March 1966. This album, released on April 8, 2008, by ESP Disk', is a testament to Cherry's innovative spirit and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz.

The album features seven tracks, including the evocative "Orfeu Negro," the tribute "Suite for Albert Ayler," and the tender ballad "Spring Is Here." Each piece showcases Cherry's virtuosic trumpet playing alongside Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri and other talented musicians. The setlist blends original compositions with reinterpretations of standards, offering a dynamic range of moods and styles.

Recorded in a single night and previously unreleased until this 2008 issue, the album provides an intimate glimpse into a pivotal moment in jazz history. The raw energy and spontaneity of the live performance are palpable, making it a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers to Don Cherry's work. With a runtime of just over an hour, this album is a rich and rewarding exploration of creative expression and musical freedom.

      About Don Cherry

Don Cherry was an innovative American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist whose groundbreaking work bridged the gap between bebop and the experimental sounds of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in 1936, Cherry's career took off in the late 1950s, and he quickly became known for his distinctive sound and fearless approach to jazz. A founding member of Ornette Coleman's revolutionary quartet, Cherry's collaborations and solo work pushed the boundaries of the genre, earning him a place among the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. His albums "Complete Communion" and "Symphony for Improvisers," recorded during his time leading a band in Europe, are particularly celebrated for their inventive and exploratory spirit. Cherry's legacy endures as a pioneer who continually sought to expand the possibilities of jazz.
