      Album Details

Thomas Linley Jr., a prodigious talent of the 18th century, left behind a musical legacy that continues to captivate audiences today. His album, "The Song of Moses & Let God Arise," is a testament to his compositional genius, offering a rich tapestry of choral and orchestral works that blend sacred themes with classical elegance.

Released in 1998 by Hyperion, this album features 23 tracks that span a duration of approximately 66 minutes. The album is divided into two main sections: "The Song of Moses" and "Let God Arise." Each section is a masterclass in baroque-inspired composition, showcasing Linley Jr.'s ability to weave intricate harmonies and dynamic rhythms.

"The Song of Moses" is a series of recitatives, arias, and choruses that draw inspiration from biblical narratives. The piece opens with a powerful chorus, "Praise Be to God, and God Alone," setting the tone for the spiritual journey that follows. The album features a variety of vocal and instrumental performances, including duets and accompanied recitatives, each contributing to the overall grandeur of the work.

"Let God Arise" continues the sacred theme with a series of choral and solo pieces. The overture, marked by its dramatic shifts between andante and allegro, sets the stage for the subsequent choral works. Highlights include the duet "He Is a Father" and the air "Give Thanks, O Israel," both of which showcase the depth and range of Linley Jr.'s compositional skills.

Performed by The Parley of Instruments and the Holst Singers under the direction of Peter Holman, this album benefits from a stellar cast of musicians who bring Linley Jr.'s score to life with precision and passion. The recording quality is exceptional, allowing every nuance of the performance to shine through.

For those interested in the works of Thomas Linley Jr., this album is an essential addition to their collection. It offers a comprehensive overview of his sacred choral works, providing a glimpse into the musical world of the late 18th century. Whether you are a fan of classical music, a student of music history, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful compositions, "The Song of Moses & Let God Arise" is sure to delight and inspire.
