Lift Every Voice - Charles Lloyd

      Album Details

Charles Lloyd, the legendary jazz saxophonist, presents "Lift Every Voice," a masterful collection of 18 tracks that blend contemporary jazz, post-bop, and free jazz elements into a cohesive and captivating whole. Recorded in February 2002 at Oceanway and Cello Studios in Los Angeles, this album showcases Lloyd's signature sound and his ability to seamlessly weave together diverse musical influences.

"Lift Every Voice" features a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of classic songs, including spirituals, hymns, and folk tunes. The album opens with "Hymn to the Mother," a serene and contemplative piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Throughout the album, Lloyd's tenor saxophone soars, backed by a talented ensemble that includes Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The band's chemistry is palpable, with each member contributing to the rich tapestry of sound that defines this album.

Highlights include "Amazing Grace," a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the classic hymn, and "What's Going On," a powerful cover of Marvin Gaye's iconic song. "Te Amaré" offers a taste of Latin influences, while "Hafez" and "Shattered Heart" showcase Lloyd's improvisational skills. The album concludes with "Prayer, The Crossing," a poignant and reflective piece that brings the journey full circle.

With a duration of over two hours, "Lift Every Voice" is a testament to Charles Lloyd's enduring talent and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz. This album is a must-listen for fans of the genre and anyone who appreciates beautifully crafted music.
