      Album Details

Kenneth Leighton's "Leighton: Symphony No. 2 & Te Deum laudamus" is a captivating exploration of orchestral and choral music, released in November 2008 under the Chandos label. This album showcases Leighton's mastery of composition, blending profound emotional depth with intricate musical structures.

The centerpiece of the album is the Symphony No. 2, Op. 69, subtitled "Sinfonia mistica in memoriam F.L." This six-movement symphony is a tribute to a significant figure in Leighton's life, as indicated by the dedication. The symphony unfolds with a sonnet-like first movement, followed by a lively scherzo, a contemplative meditation, an elegiac lament, a second scherzo titled "Sic vita," and a triumphant finale. Each movement is a testament to Leighton's ability to convey a range of human emotions through music.

Complementing the symphony is the "Te Deum laudamus," a choral work that showcases the powerful voices of the BBC National Chorus of Wales. This piece is a joyful hymn of praise, demonstrating Leighton's skill in writing for choir and orchestra.

The album features the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, conducted by Richard Hickox, with solo performances by Sarah Fox (soprano) and Gareth Rhys-Davies (baritone). Their interpretations bring Leighton's compositions to life, highlighting the intricate details and emotional resonance of his music.

With a duration of just under an hour, this album is a rich and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, Kenneth Leighton's "Leighton: Symphony No. 2 & Te Deum laudamus" offers a compelling journey through the world of orchestral and choral music.
