      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the intricate and captivating world of Kenneth Leighton's chamber music with this exquisite album, featuring his String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2 and the Seven Variations for Quartet, Op. 43. Released in 2002, this collection showcases the brilliance of Kenneth Leighton's compositional prowess, performed masterfully by the Edinburgh Quartet.

The album opens with the String Quartet No. 1, Op. 32, a work that unfolds in three distinct movements, each offering a unique blend of intensity and refinement. The first movement, "Con moto," sets a lively pace, while the second, "Lento Sostenuto," provides a moment of profound reflection. The third movement, "Allegro molto e ritmico," concludes the quartet with a dynamic and rhythmic flourish.

The String Quartet No. 2, Op. 33, follows with four movements that explore a range of moods and textures. From the contemplative "Molto adagio - Allegro - Presto" to the energetic "Allegro energico," and the poignant "Epilogo. Molto lento," each section reveals Leighton's deep understanding of the string quartet form.

The Seven Variations for Quartet, Op. 43, is a tour de force of compositional skill, with each variation offering a fresh perspective on the original theme. From the serene "Adagio sostenuto" to the whimsical "Capriccioso alla valzer," and the exhilarating "Allegro precipitoso (presto)," this set of variations is a testament to Leighton's versatility and innovation.

Recorded with exceptional clarity by Meridian Records, this album is a treasure trove for fans of classical chamber music. Kenneth Leighton's intricate compositions, combined with the Edinburgh Quartet's impeccable performance, create an unforgettable listening experience that highlights the beauty and complexity of his musical vision.
