      Album Details

Dive into the rich, soulful sounds of Gene Ammons with "Legends Of Acid Jazz: Gene Ammons," a captivating compilation released on January 1, 2009, under the Prestige label. This album is a testament to Ammons' mastery across various jazz genres, including hard bop, soul jazz, bebop, acid jazz, and cool jazz, offering a diverse and engaging listening experience.

Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, on November 11, 1970, the first six tracks originally appeared on the Prestige release "The Black Cat!" This reissue brings together a collection of tracks that showcase Ammons' virtuosic tenor saxophone playing and his ability to blend various musical influences into a cohesive and dynamic whole.

The album opens with the title track, "The Black Cat," setting the tone for a journey through a mix of original compositions and well-chosen covers. Standout tracks like "Long, Long Time," "Piece To Keep Away Evil Spirits," and "Jug Eyes" highlight Ammons' improvisational skills and his knack for creating infectious grooves. The album also features a rendition of "I Can't Stop Loving You," showcasing Ammons' ability to infuse classic material with his unique style.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 14 minutes, "Legends Of Acid Jazz: Gene Ammons" is a substantial and satisfying listen, perfect for both longtime fans and those new to Gene Ammons' music. The album's international package redesign adds a modern touch to this classic collection, making it a visually appealing addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection.

Whether you're a fan of hard bop, soul jazz, or simply great saxophone playing, this album offers something special. Gene Ammons' "Legends Of Acid Jazz" is a celebration of his enduring legacy and a reminder of why he remains one of the most influential figures in jazz history.

      About Gene Ammons

Gene Ammons, affectionately known as "The Boss" and "Jug," was a titan of the jazz scene, renowned for his powerful, soulful tenor saxophone playing. Born into a musical family in Chicago, with his father being the legendary boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons, Gene's journey in music was destined from the start. His career took off in the 1940s, playing with the likes of Billy Eckstine and Woody Herman, and he quickly made a name for himself with his big, blues-inflected sound. Ammons' style was a unique blend of bebop, blues, and R&B, making his music accessible and deeply soulful. Throughout his career, he recorded for prestigious labels like Prestige and Chess, leaving behind a rich discography that includes classics like "Boss Tenor." Despite facing personal challenges, including a six-year hiatus due to imprisonment, Ammons' influence on soul jazz and the Chicago School of jazz is undeniable. His music continues to inspire, offering a timeless journey through the heart of American jazz.
