      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the golden age of opera with "Lebendige Vergangenheit," a captivating collection of arias and duets performed by the legendary Italian tenor, Ferruccio Tagliavini. Released in 2006 by Preiser Records, this album is a testament to Tagliavini's renowned vocal beauty and expressive prowess, particularly in the delicate mezza voce style that made him a beloved figure in the world of opera.

Spanning a little over an hour and seventeen minutes, this album features a diverse range of pieces from some of the most celebrated operas in the repertoire. From the comic charm of Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" to the tragic intensity of Puccini's "Tosca," Tagliavini's performances are marked by their technical virtuosity and deep musical insight. Highlights include his tender rendition of "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore," his powerful delivery of "Recondita armonia" from Puccini's "Tosca," and his heartfelt performance of "Che gelida manina" from the same composer's "La Bohème."

Tagliavini's artistry is further enriched by his collaborations with other notable artists, including his wife, the soprano Pia Tassinari. Their duets, such as "Suzel, buon di" and "Ed anche Beppe amò" from Mascagni's "L'Amico Fritz," showcase their exceptional chemistry and musical compatibility.

Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Lebendige Vergangenheit" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. With its exquisite performances and diverse repertoire, this album is a true celebration of the operatic art form and a fitting tribute to one of its greatest practitioners, Ferruccio Tagliavini.

      About Ferruccio Tagliavini

Ferruccio Tagliavini, born in 1913 in the small commune of Cavazzoli near Reggio Emilia, Italy, was an operatic lyric tenor whose career flourished primarily in the 1940s and 1950s. Renowned for the exceptional beauty of his voice, Tagliavini was often hailed as the successor to legendary tenors Tito Schipa and Beniamino Gigli. His performances captivated audiences, particularly in the United States, where he became a favorite at the Metropolitan Opera. Tagliavini's repertoire showcased his remarkable vocal prowess, though his career did not fully sustain the initial promise of his early years. Despite this, his recordings from the period, particularly those made between 1939 and 1954, remain cherished by opera enthusiasts for their idiomatic charm and the sheer beauty of his sound. Tagliavini's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to the bel canto tradition and his ability to draw out sustained, glittering threads of melody.
