Langlais: Suite Medievale / Cinq Meditations Sur L'Apocalypse - Jean Langlais

      Album Details

Jean Langlais, a renowned French composer, organist, and improviser, presents a captivating collection of works in "Langlais: Suite Medievale / Cinq Meditations Sur L'Apocalypse." Released in 1996 under the Naxos label, this album is a testament to Langlais' musical genius and his deep connection to his Celtic roots.

The album features two significant compositions: the "Suite Medievale, Op. 56" and the "5 Meditations sur l'apocalypse." The "Suite Medievale" is a five-movement suite that draws inspiration from the medieval period, showcasing Langlais' ability to blend historical influences with contemporary organ playing. The suite begins with a "Prelude" that sets the stage for the subsequent movements, including the intricate "Tiento," the contemplative "Improvisation," the serene "Meditation," and the triumphant "Acclamations."

The second half of the album is dedicated to the "5 Meditations sur l'apocalypse," a powerful and introspective exploration of the Book of Revelation. Each meditation delves into different aspects of the apocalypse, from the prophetic visions to the call for the return of Jesus. The final movement, "La Cinquieme Trompette," is a particularly striking piece that leaves a lasting impression.

Performed by the talented organist Bruno Mathieu, this album is a must-listen for fans of classical and contemporary organ music. With a total duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes, it offers a rich and immersive experience that highlights the depth and versatility of Jean Langlais' compositions. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of organ music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Jean Langlais

Jean Langlais, born in the small Breton village of La Fontenelle near Mont-Saint-Michel in 1907, was a prolific French composer, organist, and improviser who left an indelible mark on the world of sacred music. Despite losing his sight at the age of two due to congenital glaucoma, Langlais' musical journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He studied at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he mastered the violin, piano, and organ under the tutelage of André Marchal. Langlais' compositions, numbering 254 opus numbers, span a wide range of genres, including organ, vocal, and instrumental music, often drawing inspiration from his Breton heritage and deep faith. For over four decades, he served as the organist at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, following in the footsteps of his mentor, César Franck. Langlais' music is a testament to his profound belief, his love for life, and his ability to connect with people on a deeply personal level, making him one of the pillars of French sacred music in the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
