      Album Details

Jean Langlais, a renowned French composer and organist, presents a captivating collection of sacred choral works in this album, released on December 17, 1997, under the Deutsche Grammophon label. The album features seven tracks, including the three solemn psalms (Psaume Solennel Nos. 1-3), which showcase Langlais' mastery of choral writing and his deep understanding of the sacred text. The pieces are performed by the Pro Arte Orchestra of London and Murray Stewart, with the East London Chorus adding their powerful voices to the mix.

The album opens with "Cortège," a dramatic and processional piece that sets the stage for the solemn psalms that follow. "Psaume Solennel No. 1" is a monumental work, lasting over 13 minutes, and is a testament to Langlais' ability to create complex and harmonically rich choral music. "Libera me" is a shorter but equally powerful piece, showcasing the composer's skill in setting Latin text to music. "Psaume Solennel No. 2" and "Psaume Solennel No. 3" continue the theme of solemnity and reverence, with the latter being a particularly striking and dramatic piece. The album concludes with "Ceremony," a shorter but no less impressive work that brings the collection to a close.

This album is a must-listen for fans of choral music, particularly those interested in the sacred choral tradition. Langlais' music is deeply rooted in the French choral tradition, but also shows the influence of his studies with the great French composer and organist, Marcel Dupré. The performances on this album are of the highest quality, with the Pro Arte Orchestra of London and Murray Stewart bringing out the best in Langlais' music. The East London Chorus also delivers a powerful and moving performance, adding depth and richness to the choral textures. Whether you're a fan of choral music or simply looking for a collection of beautiful and moving sacred music, this album is sure to impress.

      About Jean Langlais

Jean Langlais, born in the small Breton village of La Fontenelle near Mont-Saint-Michel in 1907, was a prolific French composer, organist, and improviser who left an indelible mark on the world of sacred music. Despite losing his sight at the age of two due to congenital glaucoma, Langlais' musical journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He studied at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he mastered the violin, piano, and organ under the tutelage of André Marchal. Langlais' compositions, numbering 254 opus numbers, span a wide range of genres, including organ, vocal, and instrumental music, often drawing inspiration from his Breton heritage and deep faith. For over four decades, he served as the organist at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, following in the footsteps of his mentor, César Franck. Langlais' music is a testament to his profound belief, his love for life, and his ability to connect with people on a deeply personal level, making him one of the pillars of French sacred music in the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
