      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Édouard Lalo's masterful compositions with the album "Lalo: Violin Concerto, Fantaisie norvégienne & Symphonie espagnole." This exquisite collection, released in 2009 under the BIS label, showcases Lalo's virtuosity and the profound expressiveness of his violin works.

The album features three of Lalo's most celebrated pieces: the Violin Concerto in F Major, Op. 20, the Fantaisie norvégienne, and the Symphonie espagnole, Op. 21. Each piece is performed with remarkable skill and passion by violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow, accompanied by the Granada City Orchestra under the direction of Kees Bakels.

The Violin Concerto in F Major, Op. 20, opens with a serene Andante that gradually builds into a lively Allegro, showcasing the violin's agility and the orchestra's rich textures. The second movement, Andantino, is a tender and introspective interlude, while the final movement, Allegro con fuoco, is a fiery and exhilarating display of technical prowess.

The Fantaisie norvégienne is a charming and evocative work, inspired by Norwegian folk melodies. The first movement, Allegretto non troppo, is a playful and whimsical dance, while the second movement, Andante, is a lyrical and melancholic reflection. The final movement, Allegro, is a lively and energetic conclusion to this delightful suite.

The Symphonie espagnole, Op. 21, is a five-movement work that blends Spanish folk themes with classical symphonic forms. The first movement, Allegro non troppo, is a dramatic and powerful opening, while the second movement, Scherzando. Allegro molto, is a playful and mischievous interlude. The third movement, Intermezzo. Allegretto non troppo, is a lyrical and introspective passage, and the fourth movement, Andante, is a tender and romantic melody. The final movement, Rondo. Allegro, is a triumphant and exhilarating conclusion to this magnificent work.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 9 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Lalo's violin compositions, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience for classical music enthusiasts. Whether you're a longtime fan of Lalo's music or a newcomer to his works, this album is sure to captivate and inspire you.

      About Édouard Lalo

Édouard Lalo, born into a military family of Spanish descent in Lille, France, was a composer, violist, and violinist whose music continues to captivate audiences. Despite his father's initial disapproval, Lalo pursued his passion for music, studying at the Lille Conservatoire and later at the Paris Conservatoire under François-Antoine Habeneck. His most renowned work, the "Symphonie Espagnole," is a vibrant and technically demanding concerto for violin and orchestra that showcases his mastery of orchestration and remains a staple in the classical repertoire. Beyond this piece, Lalo's contributions to French chamber music are significant, and his opera "Le roi d'Ys" is another notable work. Lalo's compositions are characterized by their clarity, originality, and tunefulness, making him a composer whose music is both engaging and enduring.
