Lalo & Saint-Saëns: Cello Concertos - André Navarra

      Album Details

André Navarra, a renowned French cellist, presents a captivating collection of cello concertos with his album "Lalo & Saint-Saëns: Cello Concertos." Released in 1967 under Warner Classics International, this chamber music album showcases Navarra's exceptional skill and musicality through two iconic works: Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 33, and Édouard Lalo's Cello Concerto in D Minor.

The album opens with Saint-Saëns' concerto, a piece that exemplifies the composer's romantic style and offers a rich, expressive landscape for the cello. Navarra's performance is marked by its technical precision and emotional depth, bringing out the full range of the instrument's capabilities. The concerto's three movements—Allegro non troppo, Allegretto con moto, and Molto allegro—each present unique challenges and opportunities for the soloist, which Navarra navigates with grace and virtuosity.

The second half of the album features Lalo's Cello Concerto in D Minor, a work that is both lyrical and dramatic. Navarra's interpretation is nuanced and powerful, highlighting the concerto's intricate melodies and harmonies. The three movements—Prélude. Lento - Allegro maestoso, Intermezzo - Allegro presto, and Introduction. Andante - Allegro vivace—showcase the concerto's dynamic range and emotional depth.

Throughout the album, Navarra is accompanied by the Czech Philharmonic, providing a rich and supportive backdrop for his performances. The recording quality is excellent, capturing the full resonance of the cello and the orchestra. With a total duration of 45 minutes, this album is a concise yet comprehensive showcase of Navarra's artistry and the beauty of these two cello concertos. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding listening experience.
